GLOBAL STUDY & ACADEMIC MOBILITY

Study Abroad. Connect Globally. Learn Beyond Borders.

KIU provides a framework for international study, mobility, collaborative delivery and research partnerships, connecting students and scholars with partner institutions around the world.

Explore study, exchange, collaborative doctoral supervision and international academic mobility through KIU’s global partnerships.

A World of Academic Possibilities

Study abroad at KIU is built around arrangements with international higher education institutions and other partners. The structure of each arrangement depends on the programme, partner relationship and academic responsibilities agreed between the institutions.

01

Study at KIU

Students registered at an international higher education institution may undertake a period of study at KIU under an arrangement agreed by both institutions.

02

Academic Mobility

Students and staff may spend time at partner institutions through mobility and exchange arrangements, where applicable.

03

Collaborative Study

International partnerships can support joint supervision, dual degrees, transnational education and other collaborative arrangements.

Study Abroad

An arrangement in which students registered at an international higher education institution undertake a period of study at Kesmonds International University.

The study programme for each student is agreed by both institutions, and students are required to pay fees to Kesmonds International University.

Joint Supervision / Cotutelle

This is an arrangement for an individual PhD student or small single cohort. The student is supervised by a supervisor at KIU and by a supervisor at a partner institution.

The student may or may not spend time at the partner institution. KIU will generally enter into joint supervision arrangements where relevant expertise does not exist at KIU.

KIU awards the degree where co-supervision is approved, while part of the period of study may be spent at the partner institution.

Transnational Education

This refers to collaborative arrangements, most often involving the establishment of an overseas campus to deliver University programmes and make awards.

An overseas campus may include Delivery Partners, in-country teaching, joint delivery or an award arrangement with a partner degree-awarding institution.

Delivery Partner Provision Requires

The establishment of an overseas campus will be managed through a Project Board. The Board oversees planning and negotiations, due diligence and relevant University approvals, including the Quality Assurance Committee, Governing Council and University Senate.

Distance Program

This involves delivery of a KIU programme to cohorts of students using the premises and/or facilities of another organization.

KIU retains control of delivery and teaching, usually delivered online from KIU, together with academic support. The partner may provide administrative support but not supervision, teaching, academic support or student services.

The host provides study space and IT facilities. Students have access to KIU library and support facilities, and a single award is made by KIU.

Dual Degree

A dual degree arrangement has a longer overall study period and greater volume of learning than either award individually, but is typically shorter than taking each programme consecutively.

Partners must have degree-awarding powers. Students normally study at both partners, and KIU is expected to deliver at least 50% of a programme for which students achieve a dual degree. Each partner issues a certificate identifying the collaborative nature of the award.

01

Franchised Provision

KIU authorizes a Delivery Partner to deliver KIU-developed programmes leading to KIU awards. Depending on the arrangement, the partner may deliver learning, assessment, student support and facilities, while KIU remains responsible for the quality of the award and student experience.

02

Validated Provision

A programme or part of a programme developed and delivered by another organization is validated by KIU to lead to a KIU award. KIU evaluates the programme and the partner’s teaching, support and facilities.

03

Academic Responsibility

For franchised and validated programmes, KIU’s academic regulations, policies and procedures apply, and KIU remains responsible for the quality of the award and student experience.

Research Partnerships

KIU strategic research partnerships bring together complementary strengths and deepen the impact of cross-disciplinary research.

International research partnerships may involve individual researchers or teams overseas to provide access to particular techniques, samples or equipment, develop critical mass and competitive advantage, drive international collaboration on papers, access new funding, promote research internationally, or enable impact through policy makers, international organizations or industry representatives.

Research partnerships may include mobility programmes for faculty and doctoral students.

Mobility & Exchange

Mobility — Staff

Staff mobility provides an opportunity to spend a short period at another institution, normally overseas, and share expertise in teaching, research or administration.

It can strengthen strategic relationships, support capacity building and provide development opportunities.

Mobility — Students

Students on specified KIU awards can spend time at a partner institution as visiting or exchange students. This may include accruing credits at international EU and non-EU partner institutions with independent degree-awarding powers.

Arrangements may operate on an exchange basis, with partner students accruing credits at KIU.
